International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

We spent the majority of our evening prayer service praying for our ministry partners in some of these dark areas. We watched the video produced by Voice of the Martyr’s, which focused on the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Our prayer as a church is that we would continue in fervent prayer for our brothers and sisters around the world. That it would not be a one day things, but rather a regular part of our prayer life. As the writer of the book of Hebrews instructed the readers in Hebrews 13:3 “Remember the prisoners as if chained with them – those who are mistreated – since you yourselves are in the body also.”

Democratic Republic of Congo Update
Daniel Balume was an assistant pastor at Calvary Chapel Eldoret, Kenya, before being sent out by them about three years ago to plant the church in his home country and is now the Pastor of Calvary Chapel Goma, DRC.

Prayer Requests Democratic Republic of Congo

– Pray for protection from physical persecution. That the Lord would miraculously protect churches, towns and villages from Islamic terrorists.
– Pray for those who still need healing from trauma
– Pray for the seemingly endless wars to cease.
– Pray for the sense of hopelessness that is often the result of war
– Pray for the economic struggles that follow war. That churches would be able to continue to meet, continue to care for the needy (especially the widows and orphans), and for the funds often necessary to register a church in order for them to be legal
– Pray for the spiritual darkness that has taken root through false doctrine, particularly in the form of the prosperity gospel
– Pray for pastor Daniel and his family to continue to minister in the city of Goma, surrounded by so many evils and difficulties
– Pray for pastor Daniel as he recovers from Malaria

Syria, Middle East, & North Africa Update | Ananias House Ministries
Ananias House ministries focuses mainly on helping and equipping believers throughout the Middle East and North Africa. John’s father is a pastor in that region and he is very familiar with the persecutions currently taking place in Syria.

Prayer Requests

– Pray for the 500+ believers in a certain country (unnamed in the video) currently in prison for their faith.
– Pray for John and his team to know how to fight for these believers, and others, through any legal means available
– Pray for protection for their ministry partners as many of the believers that remain in Syria are faced with the decision of whether or not they should flee.
– As the difficulties grow, more and more people are turning to the church. Pray that they can stand strong as a source of hope even while facing their own troubles

Nigeria Update
Prince Lawrence, Pastor of Calvary Chapel Abuja, Nigeria, has been pastoring there for 20 years. There have been numerous other Calvary Chapels throughout the nation that have been sent out from his church. Nigeria is one of the epicenters of persecution in the world right now, with over 60% of all those martyred for their faith coming from this one country.

Prayer Requests

– Pray for believers in the south who face regular threats of kidnapping and those in the north who often face severe threat of violence.
– Pray for the Spirit of God to move amongst the true believers there, and to bring an end to the false doctrine of the prosperity gospel.
– Pray for the Lord to continue to raise up faithful men and women to go into the dark places with the light of the gospel.
– Pray for Calvary Chapel Abuja and their vision to engage the youth with a Bible training center, sports programs, etc. Pray that they Lord uses these as a pipeline for ministers of the gospel.
– Pray for the work that CC Abuja has in the IDP camp. Pray that the light of true shines brighter in the eyes of the needs than the promise of food from the Muslims that also visit the camp.
– Pray for Pastor Prince and his wife Florence and their children, that the Lord will continue to strengthen them and bless the work of their hands

Vietnam Update
Lastly we got an update from pastor Rick Barnett, of Calvary Chapel Okinawa, Japan. Rick recently had the opportunity to travel and speak at a pastors’ conference in North Vietnam, the first ever in that country. Nearly 800 pastors and church leaders gathered for this conference which was put together by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. See the update from the conference and prayer requests here.

Prayer Requests

– Pray for protection for the pastors, especially those in the countryside, who face imprisonment for having church services
– Pray that the officials that heard the Gospel at the conference would get saved and be able to effect real change in the nation
– For the pastors to have continued access to discipleship materials and opportunities, as many of them have very little resources
– Pray for the continued grace of the Lord allowing more events to take place and churches to be formed
– Pray for all of Asia, as many places face persecution and even those that don’t (like Japan) still have very little Christian presence. Pray for God to raise up pastors and missionaries to go to these places.
– Pray for Pastor Rick and his wife, Kristi, as they continue to minister on the physically and economically safe, but spiritually dark island of Okinawa, Japan.
