Earlier this week I was able to talk to some of our team that are ministering in Ukraine for the next three weeks. The team is going throughout Ukraine and ministering to the Ukrainian military as well as refugee’s from Crimea, and Eastern Ukraine that have been fleeing the front lines of war. Paul and Igor are from Ukraine and have a Christian rock band in which they use concerts to share the gospel with those who are in attendance. They will be working alongside the Calvary Chapel churches in the country to help bring food, clothing, and Bibles to those that are in need because of this tragedy. Check out this Skype video for more information and for specific ways to be praying for them.
Hi everyone, I just received an update from Igor and Paul in Ukraine. Check out below to find out what they will be doing this next week, as well as some specific items to be praying for.
Good morning my brother!
So, we’ve been here for almost a week and at the moment we are at C.C. Ternopil, getting our program ready for the beginning of this tour. We have some wonderful musicians playing with us, two of them btw are George and Jon Markey, pastor and worship leader of this local Calvary. Monday night we are gonna be heading back to Odessa in 2 vans, since our first big concert will be held in a huge government youth and children summer center (lots of them are refugee from eastern Ukraine) called ” Molodaya Gvardiya” (Young Guards) this name have been there since the Soviet Union times.(free information).
For the past 3 days we were meeting with different people and planning our time in Odessa. Here is our approximate plan for the first week of our tour:
Tuesday – arrival to Odessa from Ternopil and our 1st concert at 8pm.
Wednesday and Thursday – probably concerts for Ukrainians marines, since we are working there with military chaplain we should have plenty of opportunities to serve during these 2 days. Also we will visit drug rehab on one of those evenings, where we will have a small service.
Friday and Saturday – small trip to Kherson region, right at the Crimea border, we are partnering up with one of the local pastors to visit several border military camps and play for those soldiers.
Sunday – another big concert at the “Kuyalnik” sanatorium in Odessa. This is a major location for refugees from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. There are more than a two thousand people at this place, also, some of the military personnel from occupied Crimea will be there as well.
Please be praying about all these things, so our Lord would provide people with open hearts and open doors!
Lastly, during our days in Odessa we met a great guy who’s ministry is helping injured soldiers, and also providing food for soldiers on those block posts. We had a chance to bring some groceries with him to one of those places and meet soldiers from the National Guard and give them Bibles! Everyone at this location it pretty jumpy, since several days ago, one of the soldiers was shot from the nearby woods… -looks like separatists are trying to destabilize the situation in the Odessa region. Please pray for peace in Ukraine, as people here are really scared and tired of this war!
On Saturday night, our missionaries Igor and Paul (who often work in Yamal Siberia with the Nanet people group) travelled to their home country of Ukraine for a three week trip to work alongside Calvary in various outreaches to the Ukrainian military and also to those that have been wounded in the fighting and are currently in hospitals.
One of the ways that the Lord has opened doors is through their Christian rock band “Vertex”. The idea is that they will be going into the Army Barracks, and perform a concert to encourage the troops and in the midst of that concert they will share the Gospel, and share Christ, who is the true source of comfort. The band will be traveling throughout the country and playing wherever the doors are opened but are targeting those that have been directly effected by the fighting in the East. Though not on the news as of late, the reports that we are getting are that many Ukrainians both military and civilian have been killed or wounded in the fighting and we are hoping to be able to get them some food, and clothing, and to share with them the good new of Christ our Messiah!
I would ask that you would keep this trip in prayer, as there are many details that still need to be sorted out regarding where the team will go to minister, and how they will be getting to each area. I received an email update from Igor yesterday that I wanted to share below. Keep checking back as I look to update this blog with more posts as I hear from them.
Just wanted to let you know that we safely got to Odessa, and had our first day of meetings in preparation for our trip with the band in this region. Thank you so much for your prayers and support. Our Lord was so kind to us, that we got plenty of space on our airplane even though it was completely filled with people. Also, once we got in Kiev, we found out that there were no bus tickets available for us to get to Odessa, but then Lord just sent people who were going to Odessa and we got to ride with them – 350 miles, such a blessing! Please pray for tomorrow’s meeting, since we hope to get a couple of big events planned! Will keep you updated as we go.
P.S. It was very weird to see a huge military blockade with armored vehicles on the outskirts of my city, it looks like people are concerned about Russians trying to capture our city, I hope that it’s not the case.
I wanted to post this interview that I did with Jed Gourley when he was here for our C.C. Philly Missions Conference this past May. (You can listen to his message from that conference in our Media section of this site).
Jed is a church planting missionary from Calvary Chapel that has served in Ukraine, and in Kyrgyzstan and is now leaving to go to the Republic of Georgia in the Caucus region of Eastern Europe.
I would ask that you be praying for Jed, Renee and their children as they once again pioneer a Calvary Chapel in a country where there are none, and in desperate need for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Pray for wisdom as they move into the capitol and start a Bible study.
- Pray for the Lord to provide them the right place to live, and for many open doors as they share Christ with their neighbors and others that they meet each day.
- Please also pray for leading and direction by the Holy Spirit in each step of this new adventure that the Lord has them on.
I’ll be updating the blog as I hear how things are going.
Thanks! Pastor Carlos
